Cercle d'Orient
Breif History
In 1882, as the result of the efforts by English ambassador, Sir Alfred Sandison, Cercl’e a’Pera was formed as a social club with its 30 members including diplomats, executives and businessmen. In 1884, it had changed its formal name to Cercl’e D’orient. In March 19 1882, founders’ meeting was led by the chairmanship of Baron De Hirsehfeld and 9 other board of directors. Meetings were held in various venues until the year of 1884. In the same year, meetings were moved to a new building which was funded by Abraham Pasha and constructed by architect Valloairi in Beyoğlu. In the ornamentation of the building, English, French and Ottoman accessories and articles were employed. In year 1930, upon Alaiyeli Mahmut Bey’s proposal meeting records were documented both in Turkish and French. Close to a century, club had kept its presence in this very location and with its every aspect; it had set an example for the community life as well as other social clubs.
From 1882 to present, all records of the general assemblies and board meetings are persevered. Our club had witnessed the greatest crises and changes of our society but at the same time it had taken a role in these proceedings while its members participated actively From the establishment of our secular and democratic republic to present day, politicians, and high bureaucrats as well as the important figures of the science, art and business world has taken role of the presidency in our club that has 6000 members.
